St Gervais les Bains (also referred to as St Gervais or St Gervais Mont Blanc) is a traditional French market and spa town, not a recently purpose built resort, and so has a significant year round population, rather than just seasonal and is full of historical buildings giving it the traditional charm much sought after in the Alps.
In winter, the main draw is snow sports, and the resort has a multi-national client base. The summer sees tourists arrive from around the world to explore the fair weather alpine activities available such as mountain biking, climbing, hiking, paragliding, and rafting. Visitors also make use of the all year thermal spa 'Les Thermes' which sits within the 'Parc Thermal' in the lower village of Le Fayet.
The Spa Thermal des Bains du Mont Blanc is half a day of relaxation in an exceptional setting. A journey of well-being in thousand-year-old thermal water, naturally warm and soothing. Relaxation workshops, saunas at different temperatures, steam baths, herbal tea room and, of course, indoor and open-air pools at the foot of the Bonnant Gorge. Each workshop is a unique experience: visual, auditory and sensory. Les Bains du Mont Blanc takes a holistic approach to well-being, highlighting the poetry of Saint-Gervais Mont Blanc’s water journey.
This label was created in 1985 by the French Ministry of Culture and Communication to enhance and promote local heritage and encourage cultural tourism. It is awarded to local authorities committed to enhancing their heritage and raising awareness among residents and visitors of the region’s history and culture.
Among the advantages of the “Pays d’Art et d’Histoire” label for local authorities are:
The possibility of receiving funding to set up cultural and heritage initiatives.
Access to a network of heritage and cultural mediation professionals.
The enhancement and preservation of heritage, helping to strengthen local identity and pride.
Located in the heart of Saint-Gervais Mont-Blanc, La Cure has established itself as a new cultural hub offering visitors the chance to discover the commune’s heritage through a program of temporary exhibitions, a library, convivial spaces and heritage itineraries created as part of the European ITINERAS Passerelle program.
Throughout the year, La Cure presents two exhibitions in these spaces. Marcel Wibault, Edgard Bouillette, Samivel, Géo Dorival, and many other artists are on display on the second floor, unveiling the collection of mountain paintings and iconography recently acquired by the commune. The top floor, near the Saint-Gervais church, houses the interpretation center for the works of Father Kim En Joong, author of the latter’s stained glass windows.
A place of resources and documentation, the La Cure library offers a documentary collection of mountain books, which can be consulted on site, to delve into the history of our massifs.
